What Do I Bring to My Light Rigid Course?

Bring your class C driver’s licence, a drink bottle, and any eyewear you need while driving.

You’ll be sitting in a truck cab for most of the day, so wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes.

Worried about running out of caffeine?

Fuel up at our on-site tea and coffee bar or walk over to Skinner Street for lunch.

Once you’re back at the training base, our assessor will take you through your practical assessment.

Huge thank you to Chris and Robyn for making my day amazing and also successful for me.

Our Light Rigid Training Vehicles

All our training vehicles are over 8 tonnes. That means you’ll train and test in a medium rigid truck – and walk away with an MR licence instead of an LR.

Do I need to do a different test with the transport department?

Before you start your course with us, you’ll need to complete the heavy vehicle knowledge test through Service NSW. It’s a 45-question in-person test that covers your knowledge about heavy vehicles and road safety.

After you’ve passed the knowledge test, you can take your practical assessment with us. If you pass, you’ll receive a competency-based certificate and your LR licence. You won’t need to take another test.

How do I get a light rigid licence?

To get a light rigid truck licence in New South Wales, you’ll need to:

  1. Hold a class C licence or equivalent for a year or more.

  2. Read the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, Road User Handbook, and Load Restraint Guide.

  3. Take and pass the heavy vehicle knowledge test through Service NSW.

  4. Pass an eyesight test.

  5. Complete a competency-based assessment through a training provider like us.

What are some tips I can use to get my light rigid licence?

Your instructor will teach you all the skills you need to pass your LR practical assessment. Here are 3 tips you can use to give yourself a head start in training.

  1. When pulling out or changing lanes, use the 5-second rule. Indicate for 5 seconds, check your blind spots and mirrors, and then move your vehicle.
  2. A truck is bigger than a car. Keep your vehicle close to the white lines in the middle of the road to avoid clipping the kerb or parked cars.
  3. A truck is also less responsive than a car. Look ahead and give yourself 15 seconds to respond to things like turns, roundabouts, or banked-up traffic.

When do I need to pay for my course?

We ask that all course fees be paid before you start. We accept card and direct debit from individual students; if you’re an organisation, we’ll invoice you once your people are booked in.

Do your training vehicles have dashcams?

Yes, all our training vehicles have dashcams. Recording all training sessions helps keep our students, our instructors, and other road users safe.

What happens if I fail?

If you don’t pass your practical assessment, you’re welcome to rebook at the next available opening. Because we charge for our instructors’ time and the use of our vehicles, we don’t offer refunds or free second attempts. Don’t worry, though – with an average 98% pass rate across our students, there’s a very good chance that you’ll get your licence on your first try.
