A heavy rigid truck licence course, which includes training and a practical assessment, costs $1,650 for an automatic licence and $2,600 for an unrestricted licence.
To get a heavy rigid truck licence in New South Wales, you’ll need to:
A Roadranger gearbox – also known as a constant mesh or crash gearbox – is a type of manual transmission used in older trucks. (The term ‘Roadranger’ actually refers to a specific gearbox made by Eaton, but it’s become a shorthand for all crash gearboxes.) Unlike an automatic gearbox, a Roadranger has no syncing mechanism, which means the driver needs to manually sync the engine’s RPMs with the drive shaft.
The syncing method recommended by Eaton is double-clutching – half-compress the clutch, move the gear shifter to neutral, half-compress the clutch again, put it into gear. When you downshift, you’ll need to increase the revs while the clutch is in neutral to avoid grinding the gears. It’s the same principle as rev-matching in a manual car.
We ask that all course fees be paid before you start. We accept card and direct debit from individual students; if you’re an organisation, we’ll invoice you once your people are booked in.
If you don’t pass your practical assessment, you’re welcome to rebook at the next available opening. Because we charge for our instructors’ time and the use of our vehicles, we don’t offer refunds or free second attempts. Don’t worry, though – with an average 98% pass rate across our students, there’s a very good chance that you’ll get your licence on your first try.
