What Do I Do After My Course?

To drive a bus, you need 2 things:

  • a rigid vehicle licence
  • a bus driver authority.

When you pass your practical assessment, you’ll get a light, medium or heavy rigid licence.
You’ll need to apply to Transport for NSW separately to get a bus driver authority.
That involves various checks and completing the bus driver training course.
You can start applying for your bus driver authority at any time, including before your training with us.

What licence do you need to drive a 12-seater bus?

You don’t need a bus driver authority to drive a 12-seater bus. Under the Passenger Transport Act 2014 (NSW), a bus is a motor vehicle that seats more than 12 adults. Depending on the gross vehicle mass (GVM) of the bus, you might need a light rigid (LR) licence.

How do I get a bus licence in NSW?

To get a rigid vehicle licence in New South Wales, you’ll need to:

  1. Hold a class C licence or equivalent for a year or more.
    • If you’re applying for a heavy rigid (HR) licence, you’ll need to hold a class C licence or equivalent for at least 2 years.
  2. Read the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, Road User Handbook, and Load Restraint Guide.
  3. Take and pass the heavy vehicle knowledge test through Service NSW.
  4. Obtain your HVCBA learner logbook and handbook from Service NSW.
  5. Pass an eyesight test.
  6. Complete a competency-based assessment through a training provider like us.

Once you have the right rigid vehicle licence and a bus driver authority, you can start driving buses.

How much is the bus driver authority course in NSW?

During your KSB course, you’ll learn how to drive a rigid vehicle and take your practical assessment. If you pass, you’ll get a rigid vehicle licence.

The bus driver authority course is a separate course. You need both to be able to work as a bus driver.

The easiest way to get your bus driver authority is to take an online training course through our partner RTO, RAISE Training. Currently, that course costs $189 (GST-free). Get in touch with us to book now.

When do I need to pay for my course?

We ask that all course fees be paid before you start. We accept card and direct debit from individual students; if you’re an organisation, we’ll invoice you once your people are booked in.

Do you offer weekend training?

Our courses typically run from Monday to Friday. If you’re interested in weekend training, please get in touch with us to ask about availability.

What happens if I fail?

If you don’t pass your practical assessment, you’re welcome to rebook at the next available opening. Because we charge for our instructors’ time and the use of our vehicles, we don’t offer refunds or free second attempts. Don’t worry, though – with an average 98% pass rate across our students, there’s a very good chance that you’ll get your licence on your first try.
