If you want to drive a bus there are several classifications that you need to understand before deciding which bus licence you need. KSB Heavy Vehicle Driver Training can help you with all the classifications.
- Light Rigid (LR) is for a bus that seats more than 12 adults (including the driver). The vehicle should be over 4.5 tonnes but not greater than 8 tonnes. You must have held your car licence for a minimum of 1 year to obtain this licence.
- Medium Rigid (MR ) is for a bus that has 2 axles and weighs more than 8 tonnes. You must have held your car licence for a minimum for 1 year. If you would like a career as a school bus driver then you must do a Public Passenger Authority Course. This allows you to carry more than twelve passengers.
- Heavy Rigid (HR) is for a larger bus that has 3 axles. These are commonly referred to as coaches and you must have held your car licence for 2 years or have held your light rigid or medium rigid for one year. If you would like a career in driving coaches then you also need to do the Public Passenger Authority Course.
