Bus Licence

If you want to drive a bus there are several classifications that you need to understand before deciding which bus licence you need.

KSB Heavy Vehicle Driver Training can help you with all the classifications.

1. Light Rigid (LR) is for a bus that seats more than 12 adults (including the driver). The vehicle should be over 4.5 tonnes but not greater than 8 tonnes. You must have held your car licence for a minimum of 1 year to obtain this licence.

2. Medium Rigid (MR ) is for a bus that has 2 axles and weighs more than 8 tonnes. You must have held your car licence for a minimum for 1 year. If you would like a career as a school bus driver, then you must do a Public Passenger Authority Course. This allows you to carry more than twelve passengers.

3. Heavy Rigid (HR) is for a larger bus that has 3 axles. These are commonly referred to as coaches and you must have held your car licence for 2 years or have held your light rigid or medium rigid for one year. If you would like a career in driving coaches then you also need to do the Public Passenger Authority Course.
